Pauline’s experience

Background

At 60 years old, Pauline Gautrey faced a significant health scare over the Christmas period. After experiencing viral illnesses and being taken to hospital on Christmas Eve with chest pains, she was relieved to find she hadn't suffered a heart attack. However, she was diagnosed with heart block and a fatty liver, two conditions that deeply concerned her, especially as a devoted grandmother to two young children.

Despite maintaining what she believed to be a healthy diet and enjoying regular walks, Pauline had long struggled with her weight and had tried multiple diets without success. As a retired nurse and midwife, she thought she understood what healthy living entailed, but the diagnosis made it clear she needed additional support.

Joining the programme

Pauline received a text from the NHS inviting her to join the Body Benefits programme, a message she took as a timely opportunity to take control of her health. She was particularly motivated by the hope of reversing her fatty liver diagnosis and committed to making lasting lifestyle changes.

“Before the course I didn’t know what to expect, but I was hoping it would give me motivation to make changes.”

During the programme

Pauline found the programme to be informative, supportive, and engaging. She particularly valued the practical guidance on nutrition, which helped her rethink her eating habits. The course materials became a valuable reference that she continued to use after the programme ended.

As someone new to the area and recently retired, Pauline also appreciated the trial fitness sessions, gym access, and the chance to connect with others in a similar situation.

“The advice and information about nutrition were very useful, and I refer to the course paperwork regularly.”

Despite being initially disappointed with her lack of visible results at the end of the programme, a supportive comment from a fellow participant shifted her perspective:

“She said I had made a change by coming on the course and finishing it, and she was right.”

Life after the course

Since completing the Body Benefits programme, Pauline has become a regular gym-goer. She follows a tailored programme, attends Nifty Fifty classes, and enjoys swimming at Tynemouth Pool. Her attitude has transformed, she now looks forward to exercise and feels more positive overall.

“I have noticed in myself a positive attitude. I look forward to going to the gym and classes, and my weight has started to head in the right direction.”

Inspired by her own progress, Pauline has even encouraged her husband to join Contours and persuaded him to try a class with her.

Final reflections

Pauline describes the Body Benefits programme as a turning point in her life. It provided the knowledge, motivation, and community she needed to start making meaningful, sustainable changes to her health and wellbeing.

“I would recommend this course to anyone. There is always something new to learn, and it has given me the motivation to make positive changes to my life.”

“Thanks to everyone involved in this course, they are knowledgeable and encouraging. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I appreciate your help.”
