Bikeability

Bikeability cycle safety training is designed to improve children’s cycling skills; from learning the basics of balance and control to planning and making short journeys on the roads.

Fully qualified, DBS checked instructors deliver Level 2* training free of charge to small groups of children and young people aged 9 to 14 years of age. All that is needed to take part is a bike (in a safe and roadworthy condition i.e. both brakes are in working order) and a safety helmet.

The training will cover the following:

  • Starting and finishing a journey by road (including passing parked or slower moving vehicles)

  • Making a U-turn

  • Identifying and reacting to hazards

  • Signalling your intentions to other road users

  • Understanding where to ride on the road

  • Using junctions (including turning left and right into major and minor roads)

  • Deciding whether a cycle lane will help your journey

  • Using the Highway Code, particularly when it comes to understanding road signs

Those who complete the training will receive a badge and certificate.

Sessions are currently delivered in schools and during school holidays, contact your school for information on any upcoming class based courses, any school holiday sessions are promoted in the news section of our website.

If you are a school or community organisation and would like to arrange a bespoke training programme for the young people you work with, please email sport@northtyneside.gov.uk

*Instructors are required to take young people through Level 1 training outcomes at the start of each Level 2 training session, if they are not able to demonstrate the Level 1 outcomes safely they will not be able to progress to Level 2.
