Body Benefits: Learning disability programme
A specialised Body Benefits programme is available to adults with a learning disability.
It is a free 10-week programme, where like-minded adults can come together, once a week, to learn how to achieve a healthier weight. We run three programmes a year and participants can attend a monthly follow up group after completing the initial 10 weeks.
Sessions are typically split into two parts. Part one focusses on a specific topic, centred around making healthier choices with food, and part two introduces different types of accessible exercise.
Throughout the programme, we aim to help participants understand the food choices available to them, and try new activities in a safe group setting.
The resources we use are easy read and visual to help aid learning. We support individuals on the programme to participate in group activities and can signpost onto other accessible, appropriate activities that take place in the borough.
We work in partnership with Learning Disability North East (LDNE) to ensure that the right specialists are working on the programme. Our team include LDNE staff and Active North Tyneside exercise and weight management specialists. The same staff are present at our 10-week programme and monthly programme sessions to ensure continuity.
Body Benefits is a free programme with eligibility criteria. You must be a resident in North Tyneside and have a learning disability. A healthier lifestyle will benefit possible health outcomes.
